Artist Statement:

The moment I stepped foot into the United States, life was chaotic. Everyone around me spoke multiple languages, had different cultures and were of a different color. Due to all these unfamiliar traits, people around me seemed like creatures from different planets. Through my concentration, I attempted to recreate my experiences from a younger age as I illustrate everyday scenes ranging from uplifting to morose ones, containing inhuman creatures, to explain the diversity and separation I felt.
Throughout this concentration, I tried to express the feelings I felt when first arriving in the United States. By drawing inhuman creatures with some human characteristics and environments, I portray the separation and diversity that I felt in my everyday life. Image 1 shows the separation in life as there is a family of dragonflies uncannily staring back at the audience, leaving them uneasy, similarly to how I felt. Image 10 portrays how fast-paced restaurant workers are, as the creature with 4 arms represents the intensity and speed at which they work at. I also show off the negative side of life in the U.S, as in Image 3, I portray all the violence and crime that I constantly saw on the news which didn’t occur as much in Poland. Although I spent time feeling separated from society, over time, I fell accustomed to it, as Image 9 is an M.C. Escher based self-portrait showing how I have transformed into becoming part of the social norm in the United States. Besides my own creative thought process, I also took inspiration from artists such as Francisco Goya, M.C Escher, and Grant Wood. Goya’s brutal and eye-opening scenes can be seen in works such as Image 3 and Image 11. While M.C Escher’s detailed and precise style can be seen throughout all my works, but specifically Image 9, where I appropriate one of his famous works.
